Conditions of eligibility

1.
The Kurt Leimer Piano Contest will take place every other year, starting in 2005. The Board of Trustees of the Kurt Leimer Foundation reserves the right to change the contest's date and venues.

People of every nationality may participate as long as they are enrolled in a Swiss college of music and studying music at the time of the contest. The Kurt Leimer Foundation, in consultation with the Director of the Department of Music of the University of the Arts Zurich, may also invite students of foreign universities / colleges of music. The same regulations apply to these students. The foundation's council is able to invite participants of a maximum of two foreign universities / colleges per piano contest. An invitation to a foreign college of music is not obligatory in order for the contest to take place.

The contest is divided into three rounds:
First round: Small recital (1st and 2nd day)
Second round: Large recital (3rd day)
Third round: Final concert (5th day)

The candidates eliminated in one round may not participate in the following round.
The repertoire lists for the individual contest rounds will be compiled by the Department of Music of the University of the Arts Zurich in cooperation with the council of the Kurt Leimer Foundation. They will be available at the time the piano contest is announced (see list of required pieces of music).

With their entry, participants acknowledge the application, the make-up of the jury as well as the conditions of eligibility.

Contestants agree to participate without pay in radio / TV shows or recordings performed in connection with the contest. The winner of the Kurt Leimer Piano Contest agrees to rehearse a piano concert by Kurt Leimer or another composer whose works are related to Kurt Leimer's repertoire and perform this piece in a concert organized by the Kurt Leimer Foundation. This concert is considered part of the first prize and will not be compensated separately.

The prize distribution as well as the amount of the individual prizes will be described in a separate part of the regulations (please see prizes).

6.
The Kurt Leimer Piano Contest may be entered by filling out the application form and submitting it along with the required documents (curriculum vitae, birth certificate and two photos suitable for publication) by the entry deadline (date of post mark) to the administrative office of the Kurt Leimer Foundation.

Participating universities / colleges are responsible for announcing the contest to their professors and students.

Entering the contest requires a visa of the university/college in which the candidate is matriculated.

An entry is only valid after the entrance fee of CHF 300.00 has been transferred to the bank or postal account of the Kurt Leimer Foundation provided in the application form.

Admission to the contest will be granted by the jury. The administrative office of the Kurt Leimer Foundation is responsible for screening received applications.

7.
A maximum of four students from one university / college will be admitted to the Kurt Leimer Piano Contest. The jury may admit more than four candidates from one university / college if another university / college has not reached its limit. In this event, admission must be proportional to available spaces. However, additional admissions in the event of free spaces are not mandatory.

The jury will inform the administrative office of the Kurt Leimer Foundation about the number of admissions. The administrative office will then inform the respective universities / colleges about the admitted candidates. Neither admissions nor rejections to the Kurt Leimer Contest will be explained.

Candidates will be informed about their admission in a timely manner and must be present for registration on the morning of the first day of the competition at the Department of Music of the University of the Arts Zurich.

Participants will be reimbursed for the entrance fee after the contest. The entrance fee will not be reimbursed if the applicant withdraws, except in the event of proved illness.

8.
Contest participants are responsible for paying their own traveling and hotel expenses. The administrative office of the Kurt Leimer Foundation as well as the Department of Music of the University of the Arts Zurich will be happy to provide information regarding hotels etc.

Traveling expenses of the chamber musician partners participating in the final round (fifth day of contest) will be paid by the Kurt Leimer Foundation. The least expensive means of travel will be paid for. This reimbursement does not apply to chamber musician partners of contest participants who did not reach the final round.

9.
Applications which are not in accordance with the contest regulations will be returned. There will be no correspondence if the response was negative.

10.
Candidates who are unable to participate must inform the administrative office of the Kurt Leimer Foundation in writing at least one month prior to the beginning of the contest. Candidates who have cancelled twice will not be admitted to future Kurt Leimer piano contests.

11.
The jury is not obligated to award prizes. The decisions of the jury are irrevocable.
Contest Rounds

The first examination round consists of a prelude. The candidate will perform three pieces: a piece from the late 18th century (repertoire list 1a), a piece from the piano repertoire from the 20th or 21th century (repertoire list 1b) and one Etude of the candidate's choice by Frédéric Chopin (repertoire list 1c). The chosen Etude by Chopin must be disclosed in the application. Eight candidates will advance to the second contest round decided by a simple majority in the jury.

Second contest round: Large recital (third day)
The second contest round is made up of a recital lasting about 30 to 45 minutes per candidate. Candidates will perform a solo repertoire of their choice containing at least two pieces, one of which must be a piece by Fréderic Chopin, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann or Sergei Rachmaninoff. The program of the recital must be disclosed in the application. At least three candidates will advance to the final round decided by a simple majority in the jury.

Day of rest (fourth day)

Final round: Final concert (fifth day)
The final round consists of a concert of one piece from the repertoire list 2a and chamber music for piano (repertoire list 2b) lasting about 75 minutes per candidate.

A simple majority in the jury determines the winner of the first, second and third prize. In cooperation with the directors of the Department of Music of the University of the Arts Zurich, the jury may also determine the winner of the Kurt Leimer Sonderpreis.
