Music Kurt Leimer plays Johannes Brahms and Pyotr I. Tshaikovsky The fourth CD of the Sonderedition Kurt Leimer consists of the second Piano concerto in B flat Major op. 83 by Johannes Brahms and the first Piano Concerto in B flat Minor op. 23 by Pyotr Tshaikovsky, interpreted by Kurt Leimer in the 1960s and early 1970s respectively. The recording of Brahms’ piano concerto with the Nuremberg Symphony under the direction of Erich Kloss, unmistakably demonstrates the essential connection between unobtrusive virtuosity and delicately honed balance between soloist and orchestra, along with the highest concentration on musical details. The CD is based on a very good studio copy which successfully reveals the unique features of Leimer’s stupendous piano technique and the distinguished playing in conjunction with the orchestra – all successfully executed with surprising warmth and clarity. The recording of Tshaikovsky ‘s piano concerto with the Skyline Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Günther Neidlinger convinces most notably because of transparent interpretation of the piano parts by Leimer, particularly in regard to pedaling details and a rich spectrum of dynamics. Leimer’s playing to a certain extent recalls a jazz style, an approach that might on first hearing be unsettling. However, this approach provides the Concerto, throughout Leimer’s performance, with astonishing clarity and expressive power. Antonio Baldassarre (trans.
